3 Extremely Thoughtful, Low-cost Gift Ideas

Yesterday we talked about some ideas to save money on gifting around the holidays.

Today I want to dive a little deeper into that idea with a few really specific ideas for you.

Also, if you have any great ideas, or stories you’d like to share with us about some thoughtful DIY or free gifts you have given, please email us at [email protected] – we might even feature your story in the newsletter!

1. Curated Dinner Experience

This is a fantastic gift for a partner, family member, or close friend. While not entirely free (you’ll need to buy ingredients), the focus is on creating a memorable experience.

Instead of simply saying, “I’m going to make you dinner, Merry Christmas,” craft a handmade invitation to an exquisite dinner event!:

  • Plan a menu around their favorite foods and drinks.
  • Go the extra mile and learn a new dish or two that complements the meal.
  • For example, if they love spaghetti and meatballs, take the time to make it from scratch, prepare some bruschetta and other upscale appetizers, and buy a decent (but inexpensive) bottle of wine that pairs well.

The thoughtfulness will go a long way towards making this an unforgettable gift!

2. Commemorate an Event with a Photo Album

This is a personal favorite! I love giving the gift of a thoughtfully curated collection of photos.

I usually create albums around a shared experience, like a trip. For example, my dad, brother, and I took a trip to Ireland 15 years ago. Last year, I made a photo album with our best pictures. It was incredibly meaningful, and many happy tears were shed! The album was far more valuable than the $20 it cost to print.

Creating photo albums is super easy, especially if you use Google Photos. Just make a folder of the pictures you want and use their print store to create a photo book.

3. ‘Coupons’ for Thoughtful Acts

My mom loves this type of gift. She used to give us “Claim 1 Night of Babysitting” coupons. Sure, she probably would have babysat anyway, but the coupons were a cute and thoughtful gesture.

You can get much more creative than babysitting, though! These are great for partners – they can be traded in for a 30-minute back rub, a week of dishwashing, or…well, you can come up with some more intimate ideas too.

Conclusion

This holiday season, remember that the most meaningful gifts don’t have to break the bank. A little creativity and effort can go a long way in showing your loved ones how much you care. Whether it’s a curated dinner, a cherished photo album, or a coupon for a heartfelt act of service, these low-cost gifts are sure to be treasured long after the holidays are over.
