Holiday gifts don’t have to break the bank (or you)
There is a lot of pressure around the holidays to buy gifts. Every other commercial you see is an ad for buying a gift. And it isn’t just about getting a gift – you have to buy the perfect gift. A watch. A pair of shoes. A car. (I’d like to become friends with some of these people buying surprise cars as gifts…)
Parents are expected to get a gift that will entertain them, fulfill them, bring them joy. The perfect wife will buy their man that lifechanging widget that will finally make them happy. Grandparents better buy something useful but also whimsical.
Isn’t this all a little ridiculous? We know it’s absurd. But subconsciously, we are all putting this pressure on ourselves. There is nothing wrong with enjoying Christmas, spoiling our loved ones with gifts. In fact, for me, it is one of my greatest joys in life. I look forward to buying the right gifts for my family and friends, the kind of gifts that will really bring them lasting joy.
Giving great gifts is NOT the same as spending a lot of money. Here are a few tips on ways to stay frugal when shopping for gifts:
-
Be Thoughtful Putting thought into a gift can save you money. A go-to for me is photo books or framed pictures. These are inexpensive and show the recipient that you care enough to put time and effort into their gift. A handwritten letter or card expressing your love and appreciation is another great idea. Sometimes the most meaningful gifts are the ones that come from the heart, not the wallet.
-
DIY There was a time that home-made gifts were the only gifts. And you know what? People loved them! Baked goods, knitted scarves, hand-painted ornaments, or even a framed piece of art created by your kids are all wonderful, personal gifts. Not only are they often more affordable, but they also show that you’ve put your time and talent into creating something unique.
-
Experiences Over Junk Instead of buying another gadget that will end up in a drawer, consider gifting an experience. Tickets to a concert, a play, or a sporting event create memories that last far longer than any material item. You could also gift a cooking class, a wine-tasting tour, or a weekend getaway. Experiences are often more meaningful and create lasting memories.
-
Donate Your Time Sometimes the best gift you can give is your time. Offer to babysit for a friend, help with yard work for an elderly neighbor, or volunteer at a local charity in someone’s name. This kind of gift is invaluable, especially for those who are busy or struggling. It shows that you truly care and are willing to go the extra mile.

Giving & Re-gifting Giving away like-new items of your own, or re-gifting something you got from someone else you never opened or used, can be a great way to save money and reduce waste. Just make sure the item is in good condition and something the recipient will actually enjoy. You can also give the gift of a skill – teach someone how to bake bread, knit, or play the guitar.
This holiday season, remember that the true spirit of giving isn’t about how much you spend, but about the thought and love behind your gifts. By being creative and resourceful, you can give meaningful gifts without breaking the bank.
